The Ancient Olympic Games by ECSDM

Approximately 2 days; 46-minute periods
Procedures
Introduction: Complete a KWL chart about the Olympic Games with the students. Encourage the students to share any background information regarding the ancient and modern Olympic Games. It is suggested that students be selected to write their answers on a SMART Board if the technology is available.
Development: The students will be informed that they will be examining a PowerPoint presentation about the ancient Olympics. Each student will receive a worksheet to complete while the instructor is presenting the lesson. The students will be required to answer the questions orally as the lesson proceeds. Encourage the students to distinguish between the ancient and modern Olympic Games. The PowerPoint presentation will be exhibited incorporating interesting information, photographs, and sound effects.
Supervised Practice: Complete the “Learned” column of the KWL chart together. If available, implement the SMART Board to enable the students to display their answers.
Closure: The instructor will review information covered during the lesson. Individual students will be asked to provide characteristics of the ancient Olympic Games.
Evaluation: The students will create a summary by implementing the information from the lesson. It is suggested that the instructor discuss how to change the questions from the worksheet into sentences in order to summarize the information more easily. In addition, it is recommended that a sample summary be displayed.
