    • Note - For the grade level and grade band standards, RI and RL are included to show how the standard applies to either reading informational (RI) or literary texts (RL), or both (RI & RL).
            • Component - 5L4a:
              Use context (e.g., cause/effect relationships and comparisons in text) as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase.
            • Component - 5L4b:
              Use common, grade-appropriate Greek and Latin affixes and roots as clues to the meaning of a word (e.g., photograph, photosynthesis).
            • Component - 5L4c:
              Consult reference materials (e.g., dictionaries, glossaries, thesauruses) to find the pronunciation and determine or clarify the precise meaning of key words and phrases.

              Interpret figurative language, including similes and metaphors, in context.
