Description
This lesson teaches students about the value of checking accounts. Checking accounts are convenient. They help you to keep track of money use, allow you to send money safely through the mail, and provide proof of payment.
Objective
The student will:
gain an understanding of how checking accounts work
understand the benefits of using checks
practice writing checks
practice writing deposit slips
practice using a check register
The student will complete a check register, write out 3 checks, complete a deposit slip, and endorse a check with 80% understanding.

Procedure
Day 1 :
Use the SMART Board Notebook file Checking Accounts. Use pages 1 and 2 as visual aids and discuss what a checking account is and what the advantages of using a checking account are. Students will write notes in their notebook, from the SMART Board as the discussion is taking place. Students will copy vocabulary terms in their notebook.
Discuss the layout of the checking register and fill out a few lines of the register on page 3 of the SMART Board Notebook, using a few made up examples, Then complete the example on page 4, using the transactions shown. Students may take turns coming up to the SMART Board to fill in the transaction information and use the calculator on the SMART Board if needed.
Next, give out the Checking account Worksheet.
Have students complete the register, either on their own or with a partner. You may choose to provide calculators if you have them. Students can be assigned homework to complete the check register and bring to class for day 2 of the lesson.
Day 2 :
Review information from day 1. Go over the check register worksheet, using page 5 of the SMART Board Notebook file. Students can come up to the SMART Board to fill in the register.
Using page 6 of the SMART Board Notebook, move into a discussion about checks and how to fill a check out. Move to page 7, complete the example on the SMART Board as students complete the example on their worksheet.
Have the students complete the next two examples on their worksheet so that they have practiced writing 3 checks. Using page 8 write out the other two checks if you wish.
Finally, using page 9 of the SMART Board Notebook- show the students a sample of a deposit slip and have the students complete the deposit slip on their worksheet and go over it to be sure they have done it properly. Also, discuss endorsing of checks. Show example on SMART Board.
Summarize by highlighting the advantages of checking accounts, reviewing the 3 parts of a checking account (register, checks and deposit slips) and the advantages of using checks.
