Step-by-Step Procedure
• This lesson takes several days to complete. Three days before the lesson have each student plant two Lima bean seeds in a sandwich bag with a damp towel. (You can use the dried seeds from the grocery store.)
• The morning of the lesson, soak more seeds in a pail of water.
- When the lesson begins, hand each student a paper towel, their bag of planted seeds, and two of the soaked seeds.
- Use the PowerPoint to review the parts of the seeds before you dissect the seeds, then leave it on so the students can easily identify what they are seeing as they dissect the seeds.
- Using the two sets of seeds, have the students dissect the germinated seeds and compare the difference to the fresh seeds.
- You can also guide students to look for the parts of the seed, seed coat, cotyledon, and embryo.
- When the dissection is complete, use the website to have students complete the worksheet. (No class notes are required all of the information needed for the sheet is on the website.) Use the Angiosperm, Xylem and phloem parts of the site to help you fill out the sheet. These are located on the top right of the web page.
- As a final check to ensure understanding, use the SMART Notebook file as a conclusion to the lesson. Have the students come to the board and complete the interactive parts of the lesson.
