Learning Experience/Unit

The Rise of Fascism by ECSDM

Subject

Social Studies (NYS K-12 Framework Common Core)

Grade Levels

Intermediate, Commencement

Assessment

The students will use their notes from the class presentation (Fifteen Words or Less), accompanying discussion, textbook and/or the internet to complete the Time-Line Sheet. The students will be required to place ten events or people in the Time-Line with the corresponding date(s) and a summary describing the entry.

Learning Context/ Introduction

The road to World War II begins at the Palace of Versailles following World War I. The peace treaty ending the First World War put into place the framework for the rise of fascism in Germany and Italy. This lesson will explore the variety of events and the people who would shape Europe during the 1920's, and describe how this culminated with the Second World War.

Duration

1 to 2 class periods

Essential Question

  1. What were the conditions (economically and politically) in Europe following World War I?
  2. How did these conditions lead to the rise to power of Benito Mussolini (Italy) and Adolf Hitler (Germany)?
  3. What methods did these two leaders use in order to gain control of the country?

Instructional/Environment Modifications

The classroom is setup with a SMART Board system and the blackboard/white board is left available for review notes.

Procedure

  1. I will explain the information presented on each slide in the PowerPoint.
  2. A class discussion will ensue for each slide to keep the students in active learning mode.
  3. Students will be asked to share knowledge and/or outside information they may have on the topic, as well as their opinions or questions.
  4. Using my Fifteen Words or Less note-taking strategy, the students will write succinct notes for each of the Power Point slides. This is an excellent way for students to identify the key information.
  5. Students will identify key terms, people, places or events from the slides. This information will be posted on the blackboard by the day's designated recorder. This work will serve as content review.
  6. Students will have the last five minutes of class to copy the material from the blackboard into their notebook. When starting a new unit, students must label the first page of their notes "REVIEW." This way they will have an organized review sheet at the end of the unit for them to study from.

Student Work

The students will take notes on the presentation and class discussion using my Fifteen Words or Less system. This means each slide should be summarized in Fifteen Words or Less to keep the material simplified.

See Assessment for extended assignment. Students will also complete the Time-Line Sheet.
