Activity

Identifying Cell Parts
Course, Subject
Biology/Living Environment, Math, Science & Technology
Grade Levels
Intermediate, Commencement, 7th Grade, 8th Grade, 9th Grade, 10th Grade
Assessment
Students' definitions will determine whether or not the students read the information. They should be able to write 2-3 sentences about the function of each organelle, but not exceeding 3 sentences.
After the activity, the students can also be given blank cells and be expected to label the parts of the cell.
You can also give the students a matching quiz that has the parts of the cells on it, and then have them draw and label a cell.
Procedure
- Students will be given Labeling a Plant Call and Labeling an Animal Cell worksheets with all the organelles that they need to define listed.
- Student will navigate to the website, CELLS alive!, and click on the Cell Models link in the navigation menu on the left side of the site. They will click on the "Take Me to the Animation" link to launch the demonstration. Students will begin by selecting the type of cell they wish to view (animal cell or plant cell) at the bottom of the animation.
The students should review each part of the cell by clicking on names of the cell parts. They should take notes for each part, limiting their definition to only 2-3 sentences for each organelle.
- Students should be given colored pencils or markers to complete the Labeling a Plant Call and Labeling an Animal Cell worksheets. Have students make a key with the definitions of the organelle and color in that organelle to match the color that the definition was written in.
Duration
25-40 Minutes
Additional Notes
Organelle functions are written in paragraphs. Students need to be able to read this information and summarize what they read in a few sentences.
