Students will present a novel project in a proficient manner both in written and public speaking forums.
Duration
9 - 45 minute class periods
Essential Question
How can students' reading influence peers to read while being beneficial beyond literary merit?
Description
Present the following italicized memo on a fancied paper ditto to intrigue interest. It is the selling point of the lesson and describes in detail what the student/reader is required to do. It is advisable that the teacher/parent create his/her own model.
For teachers, it would be ideal to use this model in a unit prior to this one without informing students that they will need to create their own at some point. The concept is that they will see the effectiveness of your model when they are encouraged to enjoy the unit you are teaching.
For parents, create a model and read a book together (there are a good number of books available at the library with listings and synopses of books that are great for read alouds for children of all ages). Afterwards, have your child choose a story/book to read alone, create a novel project, and then encourage you or others in your family to read it. You might choose to change the reward to a night out to a favorite dining place, a place of interest, or even a freedom from chores. The possibilities are endless.
The ditto could read as follows:
Congratulations!!
You've been hired by Kool Booksellers to run a sales campaign for one of their latest releases.
Your job security and commission (grade and learning success) depend on your presentation technique, neatly created poster, knowledge of your book via editorial, and your salesmanship. (Each are worth a value of 25%!)
Devise a campaign to sell the book of your choice from the approved reading list, or get a book that interests you approved from your chairman (teacher). You will meet with other great bookshop owners (your classmates) during a soon TBA designated week to present your campaign and sell the book.
Some of the possibilities for a strong campaign include offering sales incentives (read this and gain the experience of a lifetime adventure), colorful and catchy phrase posters, a critique offering true insight to the book as well as your personal after thoughts. This is a chance to be as inventive as you can!!
Should people in the class choose to read the book and report on it during the next two quarters of the school year because of your salesmanship, you will receive 100 bonus points per person. All the reader must do is indicate at the end of their report that they were inspired to 'buy' the novel because of your campaign.
Good luck and sell, sell, sell!! Let's see some creativity!!!
