Grade Levels

Commencement, 9th Grade, 10th Grade, 11th Grade, 12th Grade

Introduction

The students will learn to edit and revise a rough draft for final grading. To ingrain the editing process, the students will edit while narrating their thought processes during a video capture.

Essential Question

What are some possible methods of revising or editing your paper?

Objectives

The students will revise a rough draft using a microphone to tape their thoughts on why they are changing words or rewriting sentences.

Procedure

Step 1: Assign the rough draft homework. (digital document)

  • The student can choose to write a memoir of a person, memoir of a place, or memoir of an eyewitness account.
  • The class will read over the examples of each of the exemplar papers.
  • The class will individually make a graphic organizer and list things they can write about under each option.
  • The class will choose one of the listed items and make a graphic organizer that includes the details that should be included in the paper.
  • Students have a week to complete the assignment.

Step 2: (one week later) The students will turn in their printed rough drafts. (grade the rough drafts for 4 specific areas - MLA heading, apostrophe usage, capital letter usage, and paragraphing)

Step 3: The papers are returned to their owners and the class is taken to the technology lab to set up with head sets and learn how to record their responses as they revise their papers.

  1. Students will log into a computer.
  2. Then open the electronic version of their document.
  3. They will have a printed version of their draft with the editing comments.
  4. Each will be given a headset with microphones and explained how to plug them in.
  5. Then they are shown the recording application (We used the SMART recorder that comes with the SMART Board software. Another option would be to use Jing.) and are asked to do a quick test recording to make sure their microphones and headset are working.
  6. Then they are told to make electronic corrections to their document narrating what they are doing and why they are doing it.
  7. About 8 minutes before the period ends, you want to have them save the video because it takes time to process. Once they have saved it with their name they put it into the teacher's public folder dropbox.
  8. They then will drop their video recordings into the teacher's dropbox. The revised papers will be collected and graded as well as the recording in the overall final grade.

Student Work

Students will create a rough draft, a narrated video of their corrects, and a final product.
