Subject

Math, Science & Technology

Grade Levels

Intermediate, 6th Grade, 7th Grade, 8th Grade

Description

Students will work to create a trifold brochure, using Microsoft Publisher, that will be designed to be a brief review of one of the topics that the students have covered in their years curriculum.  This project will be used to serve as a study aid for the state test and end of the year final.

Essential Question

How can we use technology and creativity to help us to review material?  Why is it beneficial to create study aids, like this brochure?

Objectives

Students will be able to address the main points of a topic covered in math class this year.  They will be able to display the important points of a topic and review in detail two related questions in order to review the topic.  These brochures will be given to all students once they have been edited, printed, collected and copied.  Students will be able to use these brochures to review for their final exams.

Procedure

Day 1.) Hand out sample brochure (created by teacher).  Teach students how to fold this into a trifold brochure.  The teacher will then hand out the project worksheet which outlines exactly what students will be expected to do.  The teacher will go over the project worksheet with the students and have them fill in the due date at the end of the worksheet.  Students will then be assigned a partner.  There may be a group of 3 if there are odd numbers.  Once the project has been reviewed and partners assigned, students will be given a list of of the approved topics they will be able to choose from.  Students will choose a topic with their partner.  Once their topic has been chosen they will report to me (a topic may be chosen only once).  As soon as topics are chosen students may begin to draft up their brochures.  They will have the remainder of day 1 and also there entirety of day 2 to finalize their brochure draft.

Day 2.)  Students will continue to work with their partners to finalize their brochure draft.  They will need to have my approval before beginning on the computer the next day.  (correct spelling, sample questions and answers, definitions, correct procedure, etc.)

Day 3-6.) Students will be working on the computers during these days to being their brochures.  Over the course of the next 3 days the teacher will help to assist students with designing their brochures.  The teacher will need to assist with any technical difficulties that student have using Microsoft Publisher.

* Depending on the students experience with Microsoft Publisher the teacher will need to make sure he/she schedules in some time to familiarize the student with this program.  If students have worked on Microsoft Publisher before, then time won't need to be set aside to teach students this.

Student Materials

Students will need blank computer paper and pencils to draft up a rough and final draft of their brochure.  Once students have had their drafts approved they will be allowed to move to the computers and then begin their brochures on the computer.  The only materials needed will be computer paper, pencils, and access to a computer lab. (computers in the computer lab will need to be equiped with Microsoft Publisher)

Students may also use textbooks, notebooks, worksheets, old tests/quizzes in order to find sample questions they want to use.  They can also use these resources to find definitions and procedures if they need to double check anything.

Assessment

Students will be assessed based on the rubric that is attached and the requirements stated on the project description worksheet.

Instructional/Environmental Modifications

Students will work in the general education classroom while they draft up their brochures.  Students will then work in the computer lab while designing their brochures in Microsoft Publisher.  Each pair of students will need one computer to work on.

Students may work alone if necessary.

Duration

This project will require 2 days of in class work and 3-4 days of work in a computer lab.  (43 minute classes)

Reflections and Feedback

The students loved this project!  They loved the freedom to create and design and many of them said they would love to do something like this again.  The feedback that I got from students was that they enjoyed working with partners, they learned a lot about using Microsoft Publisher, and they loved to be in charge of creating and designing their work.

If I had to make changes to improve this project I would have made my rubric be more specific.  I would like to have added a section that addressed visual consistency of the brochure.  Students did a nice job with a bulk of the project, on their own, but I had to make suggestions to many groups about lining up titles, numbers, pictures, etc.  to improve the look of some of the brochures.  Other than that there were not many changes I would make.  The project turned out great and I recieved many compliments on it.
