Description

This site looks at the Transatlantic Slave Trade and Thomas Clarkson and his fellow abolitionists who fought for emancipation of enslaved Africans in the British colonies. Thomas Clarkson was described by the poet Samuel Coleridge as 'a moral steam engine'. He spent his adult life working to abolish the transatlantic slave trade and slavery itself.

Each section of the site provides resources for learning about the abolition movement:

  • Slavery - the Transatlantic Slave Trade and the development of the abolition movement.
  • Resistance - slave rebellions and other forms of resistance.
  • Campaign - the beginnings of the campaign to abolish slavery.
  • Abolitionists - biographical information about the major opponents of slavery.
  • Thomas Clarkson - a life dedicated to the abolition of slavery.
  • Sources - digitized copies of original documents and illustrations relating to the slave trade.
  • Teaching - lesson plans and tools for teachers and learners.
In addition there are high quality tools available within the site, such as a interactive timeline of slavery, audio and image galleries, and a look at 'a day in the life' of slaves and slave owners.
