Learning Experience/Unit

Presenting My Classmate by St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES

Subject

English Language Arts (NYS P-12 Common Core)

Grade Levels

Elementary, 3rd Grade

Learning Context/ Introduction

Grade 3 students will successfully interview a classmate. They will then apply the information about the student to a web they will make using the software Kidspiration 2. The student will have the option of using words or pictures in the web. They will use microphones to apply narration to their webs.

Essential Question

Who are you?

Duration

Six days, 30-40 minutes per day

Procedure

After I have modeled each step in the process the procedure will be:

Day 1
Students will use teacher-generated questionnaire to interview a classmate. They will record the information on the questionnaire.

Day 2
Students will use the software, Kidspiration 2, to create a web. They will be able to place the circles in the web and place the connector arrows to join the outer circles to the main idea circle. They will then insert the information from their interview into the web by typing in words and/or finding appropriate pictures in the software to represent the information.

Days 3, 4, 5
Students will work on their webs. Those who are finished will begin to add narration (included in the Kidspiration software) to their webs using headsets with microphones. Students will complete all aspects of their webs and grade themselves using the attached rubric.

Day 6
Students will present their webs in class.

Assessment

A rubric will be used to assess their web and their use of technology.

Scale:

8 - 9 = High
5 - 7 = Middle

    Reflections and Feedback

The students had a great time completing this project. I thoroughly modeled each step before it was turned over to the class. They came through with flying colors and were able to complete each step independently and successfully. Therefore I only have High scores. I will probably carry it a step further and turn it into a writing assignment.
