Description

This interactive two day SMART Board lesson introduces the students to the topic of Writing Linear Equations. The lesson is written to follow the Integrated Algebra Curriculum and the New York State Learning Standards. The topics introduced in this lesson include:

  • Writing an Equation Given the Slope & y - Intercept.
  • Writing an Equation Given the Graph of the Line.
  • Writing an Equation Given the Slope & a Point on the Line.
  • Writing an Equation Given Two Points on the Line.
This lesson also included a Jeopardy style review game that students can use to review the main topics learned in lesson.

Duration

Two 40-minute periods

Learning Objectives

As result of this review, the students will:

  • Write equations of lines given the slope & y - intercept.
  • Write equations of lines given their graphs
  • Write equations of lines given a point a point on the line and the slope.
  • Write equations of lines given two points on the line.

Materials

  • SMART Board with LCD Projector
  • Computer with Notebook 10 software
  • Board to keep track of points during Jeopardy
  • Class set of calculators for student use
  • Equations of Lines Notebook File
  • Copies of Equations of Lines Packet (PDF File)- one per student
  • Graph Paper
  • Equations of Lines.notebook
  • Equations of Lines Handout (PDF).pdf
  • Step-by-Step Procedure

    Day 1:

    • Step 1: Give each student a copy of the PDF file as a packet to take notes in.
    • Step 2: Open the SMART Notebook file and go through each of the 4 methods. For each method, there is a series of activities that the students will be completing. There are enough activities/questions to invite the entire class to come up to the SMART Board to participate. The directions for each activity are on the page. While students are not at the SMART Board, they can complete the activity in the note packet.
    • Step 3: Upon conclusion of the activity, assign related textbook problems for the students to complete for HW.

    Day 2:

    • Step 1: Place students in predetermined groups of 4-5 students. Have each group sit with their tables together. Make sure each member of the group has scrap paper, graph paper, a writing utensil, and a calculator.
    • Step 2: Go through the Jeopardy questions to review the information from the previous lesson. You can decide on the specific rules of how you want to game to proceed. The Jeopardy game is included in the SMART Notebook file.
    • Step 3: Reward the winning team with bonus points or a free homework pass.

    Assessment

    • HW from day 1
    • Collect packet from day 1
    • Student responses from Jeopardy
