Duration of Lesson

One 45-minute lesson

Learning Objectives

  • Students will tell time to the nearest minute.
  • Students will recognize the hour hand, minute hand, and second hand on an analog clock.
  • Students will be able to define the terms a.m. and p.m.
  • Materials

  • Access to the SMART Board for all students
  • Pencil
  • Math notebook
  • Copy of clock template for each student (Slide 11)
  • Construction paper
  • A brass fastener
  • Scissors
  • Copy of activity sheets (slides 8 and 10)
  • Time-NYL.notebook
  • Step-by-Step Procedure

    1. Slide 1- Discuss the difference between an analog clock and a digital clock. Tell the class an analog clock represents time by position on a dial, and digital clocks use numbers (digits) to represent time. Ask if anyone knows how to tell time using an analog clock. Then tell them that today they will learn to tell time using an analog clock by using the hands on the clock to tell time to the nearest minute.
    2. At this time, students may construct the clock template and mount onto construction paper (a more durable clock will work best). Press blue arrow on upper left to proceed to the next page.
    3. Slide 2- Have volunteers read the objective and the definitions for a.m. and p.m. After, have the students copy the terms into their math notebooks. Press the green arrow to proceed to the next page.
    4. Slide 3- Students will now use their clock templates. Explain to students that the smaller hand represents the hour, the larger hand represents the minutes, and the red (sometimes black ) thin line represents the seconds. Next explain that each number on the clock represents a certain number of minutes. Label each number with the minutes, 5,10,15, etc., and have the students do the same on their templates. Remind them that 60 seconds equals 1 minute, 30 minutes equals a half hour, and 60 minutes equals 1 hour. Press the green arrow to proceed to next page.
    5. Slide 4- As a class, read the steps for telling time. Model by moving the hands of the interactive clock to the right of the page and then write down the time. Click on the green arrow to continue.
    6. Slide 5- Click on the blue button under the website and continue to model telling time using the interactive clock. Set a time on the clock, ex. 1:00, and have students set their clocks. Then, tell them to advance their clocks 1 hour. Once all students are done, the teacher can advance the time on the interactive clock by pressing the button for hours. Students can now see if they set their clocks correctly. Continue this activity using different times, for example adding or subtracting a certain number of hour or minutes. When this activity is completed click the x (close) box on the upper right hand corner of page. Now, click on the green arrow to continue onto the next SMART Notebook page.
    7. Slide 6- The car is an animated object, tap on the car so it may begin moving. Then have a volunteer read the text on this page and have another volunteer place the hand to show the time on the analog clock.
    8. Slide 7- Explain that on this page you will need volunteers to come up to the SMART Board and show the indicated time on the analog clock.
    9. Slide 8- Allow students 5 minutes (time may vary) to complete this worksheet with a partner. Teacher is to walk around and assist if needed. Then have volunteers come up to the SMART Board and fill in the answers.
    10. Slide 9- Make sure the volume to SMART Board is on and press the speaker by the hands to hear the clapping sound indicating end of lesson.
    11. Slide 10- This is your assessment piece. Hand out the sheet and have students complete independently. Collect and check for accuracy.

    Assessment

    • To assess if the students are comprehending telling time, the teacher is to walk around and assist as needed when the students are completing the activity sheet -slide 8.
    • Collect activity sheet - slide 11- which is to be completed independently- and check for accuracy .
    • Ongoing informal observations throughout the lesson.
