Lesson Plan
Healthy Eating Habits by ECSDM
Grade Levels
Commencement, 10th Grade, 11th Grade, 12th Grade
Objectives
After completing this lesson, students will be able to explain the steps they will need to take to improve their overall health.
Description
Healthy eating habits are hard to find among adolescents. Many times, they under estimate how much the choices they make now will affect their futures. This activity is designed to help students understand the importance of making healthy food choices.
Essential Question
How does the average adolescent's diet compare to the nutritional recommendations for a person his/her age?
Duration
Three 40-minute class periods
Step-by-Step Procedure
- Students will enter the classroom and begin working on the Do Now: Complete the following tasks: Write down everything you have eaten/drank for the past 24 hours. This includes all snacks and meals! On a scale of 1-10 (1 being poor, 10 being excellent) how well do you think you ate?
- Students will have 5-7 minutes to complete their Do Now while the teacher takes attendance. Teacher will instruct students to keep their Do Now in a secure place, as they will need it for a later assignment.
- Teacher will introduce the lesson by engaging students in a discussion about Healthy Eating Habits. Discussion questions will assess students' prior knowledge of the topic. What does it mean to have a well balanced diet? What are the primary food groups? Why is it important to have a well balanced diet? Would you say the average teenager consumes a well balanced diet?
- Teacher will give students the Healthy Eating Vocabulary Challenge Worksheet. Students will have 5 minutes to complete this worksheet on their own.
- Students will be asked to volunteer to come to the SMART Board to correctly match the terms from their worksheet. As the students try to place the terms in the checker box, it will tell the students if they are correct.
- Teacher will explain to students that in order to have a well-balanced diet, they must first understand the food groups. Students will be asked if they know what foods belong in each food group.
- Students will volunteer to come to the SMART Board to drag and drop pictures of food into the appropriate food group. Students in their seats will assist students at the SMART Board. Once all foods are in a group, teacher will ask students if there is anything they would change. Students will then click the CHECK button to reveal the correct answers.
- Teacher will introduce the new food guide pyramid and ask the students if they have seen this before. If they have, she will ask them where they have seen it. Students will then have the opportunity to correctly label the food guide pyramid.
- Teacher will click the picture of the pyramid, which is linked to www.mypyramid.gov to reveal the proper labels.
- Teacher will introduce this site to the students showing them the different components of the site.
- Teacher will explain to students that they will have the next two days to fully explore the pyramid. Students will be in the library completing a worksheet where they will “Get to Know the New Food Guide Pyramid.” Through this exercise, students will be able to evaluate their own eating habits and set goals to improve them.
