Lesson Plan

Least Common Multiple (SMART Board) by ECSDM

Subject

Math, Science & Technology

Grade Levels

Intermediate, 5th Grade

Duration

This is a 45-60-minute lesson.

Learning Objective:
Students will calculate multiples of a whole number and the least common multiple of two numbers.

Description

This lesson will introduce and teach least common multiple (LCM) with guided instruction and independent practice. It begins with vocabulary then moves on to an example of how to find multiples and the least common multiple. Students will learn how to find LCM utilizing a hundreds chart and listing multiples. There are several opportunities for student interaction and a Senteo Question set to engage all students simultaneously.

Step-By-Step Procedure

  1. Page 2 Video: This video is designed to be viewed before the lesson begins as an anticipatory set. Following the end of the lesson, it is recommended to come back and review the video to imprint the lesson upon the students' memory. The video is embedded within the SMART Notebook file and is from http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJfx1HHF9jc
  2. Page 3: This is a basic vocabulary page to introduce multiples and least common multiple definitions. You may wish to have students take this down in their notes.
  3. Page 4: Model by pressing the number generator. Ask a student to come up and click on all the multiples of the number generated with the red marker. Have several students do this before moving on.
  4. Page 5: Start by clicking the Step 1 box. Click the number generator boxes above each hundred's chart.
  5. Click on step 2. Use the green marker to highlight the multiples on the right hundreds chart and the blue marker to highlight the multiples on the left hundreds box.
  6. Click on step 3. Use the red marker to flip the multiples that match between the two hundreds boxes. Explain to students the smallest common number is the Least Common Multiple.
  7. Reset each hundreds chart and have students try this.
  8. Page 6: Step-by-step guide and model how to find least common multiple. In the yellow box, use the eraser to reveal the multiples.
  9. For step 2, click on the numbers to reveal common multiples. Explain that you need to choose the least common multiple, not any multiple.
  10. Page 7: Students should list the multiples individually. Have two students come to the board and list their multiples. When finished listing multiples, have students move the red circles onto the common multiples and look for the least common multiple.
  11. Page 8: (Note, this is more advanced, but just to show many numbers have the same common multiple) Divide your class into 4 cooperative groups. Each group will list the multiples of their number up to 24.
  12. Have each group find any common multiples between all four numbers. Find the least common multiple together.
  13. Page 9: Students will individually find LCM. Have a student come up and model for the rest of the class.
  14. Page 11: Click on the Octopus to play a matching game on the internet. Students will move the LCM to the two numbers it belongs to and then press check to see how many are correct.
  15. Page 13-17: If your class has a Senteo Response System, then students should sign in and answer questions individually. Use the data to guide small group instruction. If you do not have a Senteo Response System, go through each question and have students write their answers on paper in a quiz format.
  16. Page 18: For more practice, click on the eggs to go to another version of the previous game. In this activity, students will match two cards with LCM.
  17. Additional Assessment may be completed using the PDF file attached.

Assessment

At the end of the lesson, there is a Senteo Quiz for use as a whole class or as individual students if a Senteo system is available. The PDF file included may also be used either for homework or class-wide assessment.
