Learning Objectives
The students will identify facts and opinions to 80% accuracy.
Materials
- SMART Board with SMART Notebook software and set-up
- loose-leaf paper

Step-by-Step Procedure
- Activate prior knowledge by displaying slide one and discuss what students already know about fact and opinion.
- Display slide two, move the blue boxes out of the way to display the two meanings of a fact.
- Display slide three, move the red boxes out of the way to display the two meaning of an opinion.
- Display slide four, and explain the definitions again in "child friendly" language with a graphic for remembrance.
- Display slide five, and click the "speaker" to activate sounds to create excitement for the practice.
- Display slide six, and allow the students to decide whether the statement is a fact or an opinion. They can come up to the board and click their statement to see if it is right.
- Display slide seven, click the speaker to create excitement.
- Display slide eight, which is an interactive game. The students will choose which statements are facts. Those statements will slide into the basket.
- Display slide nine, which is another interactive page. The students will choose opinions and place them in the bucket.
- Display slide ten, to give directions for the quiz.
- Display slide eleven, students write their answers on loose-leaf paper and hand in. The shade feature is helpful to use for the quiz, revealing one slide at a time.
Assessment
At the end of the lesson, the students will take a quiz. They have to independently decide if a statement is a fact or an opinion.

This lesson is intended to teach what is a fact and what is an opinion. It was created for use in a fifth grade classroom.
