Description
This lesson is designed for ninth and/or tenth graders who are taking Algebra classes. This lesson is intended to be used when reviewing the different types of factoring. It helps students to recognize when they should use each type of factoring.
Duration
Two 40-minute class periods.
- The first period can be used to fill in the review sheet and begin the game.
- The second lesson will be dedicated to the game and a reflective journal entry.
Learning Objectives
Students will be able to:
- distinguish between the different types of factoring.
- apply the different types of factoring when needed.

Step-by-Step Procedures
- Have students use their notes to fill in the factoring review worksheet (see attached word document).
- Teacher will go over worksheet on SMART Board filling in correct processes.
- Students will break into two groups "Red" and "Black" (I chose groups to be sure that there are students of all ability levels in each group).
- Students will play the three rounds of the factoring game (see attached SMART Notebook document for game and attached word document for rules).
- Students will complete the given journal entry (see attached word document).
Assessment
- The game itself is an assessment, while playing the teacher will keep a log (see attached word document).
- The journal entry will be used as an assessment (see attached word document).
