Step-by-Step Procedure
Day 1-
- Start with slide #1 where Space Cadet introduces himself. Read objectives to students.
- Using the SMART Board, use slide #2 to teach the order of the planets. As you say each word in the rhyme, touch the first letter to highlight it, then have students repeat the rhyme together at least two more times.
- On the SMART Board have them practice putting the planets in order. When this activity is done each student will get a vocabulary packet containing two sheets- one of vocab words, one of vocab definitions.
- Using slide #4, which students can take turns revealing by using the eraser, they will cut the definitions, match them up to the correct vocabulary words, and glue them over the words as a flip chart. This will be used to study and for the Assessment at the end of the lesson.
Day 2-
- Students will reveal video facts from slide #5 and copy them into their science notebooks.
- They will then view the videos, Earth Pt. 1 & Earth Pt. 2. These are about the Earth’s revolution, rotation, axis and other Earth facts that go along with the notes they have taken.
- After watching the video, students will have small discussion groups or a teacher led class discussion on the videos. If time permits, let the students watch the videos again.
Day 3-
- Teacher will verbally introduce the concept of gravity if they do not have a subscription to BrainPop. Use the chapter in your district’s grade level science textbook to discuss what gravity is. If you do have a subscription to BrainPop, then go to slide #6 and follow the link.
- When you are done watching the clip, complete the gravity experiment as a class. The students will prepare the experiment and the instructor will perform it in a large area, either outside or in a common area of the school where the students can be a safe distance away, but still able to observe. (Please look at the lesson button about this experiment!)
Day 4-
Using slide #7 have students fill out their Planet worksheets. Then have students take turns filling out the master graphic organizer on slide # 8.
Day 5-
Using their planet worksheets and slide #9, have students compare and contrast different planets. Students will work in small groups of 2-3 to write on the SMART Board. Instructor will assign a planet for each group to compare.
Encourage each group to find two facts for each part of the Venn Diagram.
Day 6-
Have students explore the links on Slide #10 and take notes in their science notebooks about comets, asteroids, and moons. (Suggestion: Do this as a class while using the SMART Notebook10 highlighter.)
Day 7-
- Using their vocabulary flip charts from Day 2, notes from Days 3 & 6, and their planet worksheets, have students complete the review on slide #11.
- Have students complete the assessment assignment on slide #12. Rubric for this assessment should be provided to each student. Depending on the academic level of your class, providing a graphic organizer may be useful as well as an extra day.
