Learning Context/ Introduction

In order to make students successful in school they need to see a purpose in their education. Having them think about their future career goals is one way to help them achieve.

Each year the students will be creating a brochure about a career of their choice. They will be exploring the pros and cons of their job, the job outlook, and what it takes to get to that position. They will do this through interest inventories, researching careers online, and/or by interviewing professionals in chosen fields.

A folder will be maintained by students, over their high school career, in order to promote reflection. In this way, students will relate information over the years to develop their own skills and knowledge to meet their career paths/goals.

Duration

Days 1-4: 42-minutes
Day 5: up to 42-minutes
Day 6: 42-minutes
Day 7: anywhere from 10-minutes and up to 42-minutes

Essential Question

What do I need to do in order to get the "ideal" job?
What makes a job more or less desirable?

Instructional/Environment Modifications

One computer for each student, SMART Board set-up, Inspiration software
This was taught in a 8:1:1 classroom where one-on-one attention could be given, however, this could be taught to a regular education classroom.

The students need prior knowledge on how to create brochures.

Procedure

Day 1
Discuss the importance of having a career choice in mind. On the SMART Board, using Inspiration, brainstorm some ideas on how to achieve a career. Post in classroom so we can refer to it. Discuss ways to figure out how to choose a career. Discuss how careers change for everyone.

Day 2
Introduce students to https://www.careerzone.ny.gov/views/careerzone/index.jsf. Have them complete an interest profile. Look over the list of jobs that the profile produces and save one from each job zone.

Day 3
Have student go to https://www.careerzone.ny.gov/views/careerzone/index.jsf and complete section 4 (abilities), 5 (job readiness skills) and 6 (list classes). Have them save one job from each section.

Day 4
Have students go to https://www.careerzone.ny.gov/views/careerzone/index.jsf and complete sections: 8 (life skills), 10 (future dreams), and 14 (work importance profile). If time allows, complete any of the remaining activities.

Day 5
Catch up day. Allow the students to complete any portion that is not completed. When they are done, have students look over the list of saved jobs, section 9. Pick two careers that you think would be “fun” to do after high school. Print out the job description, explain why you think it would be "fun" to do, and hand it in.

Day 6
Show sample brochure to the students. Go over the seven categories: job description, tasks, skills, outlook, wages, education needed, and knowledge needed. Do a lesson on Publisher using the SMART Board. Allow student to interact with the SMART Board. Go over the rubric of the brochure and collaboratively grade the sample. Go over what could be better and what was outstanding.

Day 7-10
Using the template, have student create their brochure on their ideal job. Have guest speakers in to speak to the class about the careers that the students have selected.

Reflections and Feedback

I feel that I did not have enough time to complete all of the work assigned for each day. The career choices that the students picked were ideal jobs, not realistic jobs for this area so finding guest speakers for each career was not possible. I would complete this lesson over an extended period of time and not in ten consecutive days. Overall, the students highly enjoyed the activity.

Student Work

The students will be creating a Publisher brochure about a career of their choice.
