Lesson Plan

More Or Less? SMART Board Lesson by ECSDM

Subject

Math, Science & Technology

Grade Levels

Elementary, Kindergarten

Learning Objectives

  • Students will develop language and Mathematics vocabulary.
  • Students will be able to compare two amounts of numbers 1 to 10, using red and yellow counters on ten frames.
  • Students will be able to create their own comparison problem for classmates to discuss and solve.

Description

In this lesson, students will participate in an activity to demonstrate and practice how we can compare amounts to determine which group of counters has more and which group has less. Red and yellow counters, each set in a ten frame, are used to illustrate the problems.

Resource/Materials

More Or Less Practice.notebook

Duration

One 45-minute class lesson.

Materials

For Students:

  • Worksheet with two- ten frames on it
  • 1 yellow crayon and 1 red crayon
  • 20 two sided counters with red on one side and yellow on the other side

For Teachers :

  • SMART Board and SMART Notebook software
  • More or Less Notebook File

Step-by-Step Procedure

  1. Begin the discussion using page1 of the More Or Less notebook file and model the counting of the counters by pointing and counting aloud as you show them using the "think aloud" process. Voice your ideas aloud, and demonstrate the way you would approach the 10 frames to begin the problem solving.
  2. Model how we can count the amount of red counters and write in the amount on the SMART Board space.
  3. Model how we can count the amount of yellow counters and write in the amount on the SMART Board space.
  4. Model how we count to verify which number is greater and has more and which number is smaller and has less.
  5. Explain how we document our findings (the amounts we counted) by writing in the answers using the SMART Board pens.
  6. Follow a similar procedure for pages 3 through 13 of the More or Less SMART Notebook File. Assist students in following the process for each problem, asking questions to verify for comprehension and answering questions as needed.
  7. Use page 14, a blank worksheet like the one used in the activities of the More or Less Notebook File, to encourage students to begin developing their own problems to compare more or less. Have students share the worksheets they created and present it to the class, on the SMART Board, for others to solve. This may be used as an assessment of the student's ability to understand the concepts.

Assessment

Students will demonstrate their understanding of the basic comparison process by using this ten frame activity for practice and then devising simple problems, to establish their own comparisons on the SMART Board.
