Lesson Plan

Coins: Names & Value by ECSDM

Subject

Math, Science & Technology

Grade Levels

Elementary, Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten

Step-by-Step Procedure

  1. The teacher will begin be reading Benny’s Pennies, a story about a boy who must try to spent his five new pennies wisely. The teacher will read this aloud as a review of this coin.
  2. After the read aloud, the teacher will introduce slide 1 and together with students, read the coin poem as a review of the rest of the coins.
  3. After this slide, the teacher will use slide two to discuss/review coin names and to reinforce the cent sign.
  4. Next, the teacher will use slide 3 as a guided activity. Several students will have an opportunity to demonstrate coin recognition by matching the appropriate coin to its numeric value. This slide will be a good assessment tool as well for students to demonstrate mastery and the teacher can assess who needs remediation.
  5. As a final guided activity, students will visit the website below to play a coin matching game.
  6. As an independent activity and assessment tool, students will complete the Handful of Coins worksheet. During this activity, students will work with their coins. Students will grab handful of coins in the ziplock bags and tell the number of each ‘handful’ they had.

Assessment

Guided activities can be used to assess mastery or remediation needed.
Final worksheet can be used to assess for coin name and value as well as indicators of appropriate use of cent sign.

Description

At the end of this lesson, students will demonstrate mastery of naming coins, their value, and the cent sign. Students will review coin names through a read aloud and a poem as well as through a handful collection of coins.
