Lesson Plan
Thermochemistry
Subject
Math, Science & Technology
Assessment
Students will be assessed on their final flowchart only. They will be assessed on their sequencing of information, their graphics, and their multimedia presentation.
See attached rubric.
Rubric For Thermochemistry Flowchart.docx
Duration
This is a four-day experience. The students are given two forty-one minute periods to complete a webquest on thermochemistry in a computer lab, and an additional two periods (41 minutes) in the computer lab to create the flowchart.
Essential Question
What every day events in your life are endothermic or exothermic?
Instructional/Environment Modifications
I did not have to make any specific modifications for this project. All levels of learners were able to complete this project. I did allow a fourth day for completion of the flowcharts, but all were done within one class period. No aide was needed. Students with very little computer experience may need a tutorial on how to use Inspiration. Most of my students used Kidspiration because it is so easy to use and the graphics are great.
Procedure
Day 1 - Hand out the thermochemistry webquest to students. Read through the sheets with the students and reinforce what websites to go to and what the directions for each section are. Take them to the computer lab to start the webquest. Thermochemistry webquest is attached.
Day 2 - Take students to computer lab to finish the webquest.
Day 3 - Hand out Thermochemistry Flowchart Sheet and rubric to students. Read through the sheet with students, which outlines the requirements of the project. Go through the rubric with them so they know exactly what elements are being graded. Take them to the computer lab to work on and finish their poster. Flowchart Sheet is attached.
Day 4 - (optional) Take students to computer lab to finish flowcharts.

Reflections and Feedback
These activities greatly added to my thermochemistry unit. By giving them activities to do in lab, it reinforced what they were learning in class and gave them a chance to learn it on their own by seeing it on different websites. The students really enjoyed being in the computer lab. I started out thinking they would use just Inspiration for the flow chart, but most of them wanted to use Kidspiration because it was easier to use and had great pictures that they incorporated with the terms. It worked out well that way too!
Student Work
Students will complete an Inspiration flowchart. See attached.

Related Resource
Access to the Internet is needed for this project as well as access to a computer lab big enough for your class. You will also need access to Inspiration or Kidspiration for the flowchart or www.inspiration.com.
Description
Students will complete a thermochemistry webquest and then, using the information they have learned, create a flowchart of thermochemistry terms using Inspiration. I did this in my chemistry lab classes to allow for smaller groups. I had three lab groups with 13-15 students in each lab. These were regular instruction classes with no aide present.
