Duration of Lesson

Three 45-minute periods

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to correctly identify synonyms and antonyms.
Students will be able to match words with similar meanings.
Students will be able to match words with opposite meanings.

Materials

SMART Board set-up
internet connection

Procedure

Day One:

  1. Have the students read the words synonyms and antonyms. Have them predict what synonyms and antonyms are.
  2. Show the video from BrainPop Jr. Then discuss what they learned from the video. What is a synonym? What are some examples of synonyms? What is an antonym? What are some examples of antonyms? (You have to subscribe to BrainPop to see all the videos. But you sign up for a free trial. The link in on the list of websites.) If you don't want to do that. You can read books about synonyms and antonyms instead. Suggested books are:
    Pitch and Throw, Grasp and Know: What is a Synonym? by Brian P. Cleary
    Stop and Go, Yes and No: What is an Antonym? by Brain P. Cleary
  3. Complete the first page from the SMART Notebook file about synonyms.
  4. Then have the students complete the synonym worksheet independently.
  5. In closing, have each student identify two words that are synonyms.

Day Two:

  1. Review what synonyms are. Have the students give examples of synonyms. Then complete page two of the SMART Notebook file as a review of synonyms.
  2. Ask the students what antonyms are. Have them give examples of antonyms. Complete the next two SMART Notebook pages on antonyms.
  3. Then have the students complete the antonym worksheet independently.
  4. In closing, have each student identify two words that are antonyms.

Day Three:

  1. Review what synonyms and antonyms are. Have student give examples of each. Then complete page 4 of the SMART Notebook file which incorporates both synonyms and antonyms.
  2. Have the students complete a synonym/antonym worksheet independently.
  3. If time allows, student can play some of the games on page 5 of the SMART Notebook file.

Assessment

Students will be assessed on their participation during the instructional portion of the lesson. They will be formally assessed on the accuracy of each worksheet they complete as well as their oral answers at the closing of each day.
