Step-by-Step Procedure

1. The teacher will introduce the concept of fractions by clicking the center circle link to www.brainpopjr.com. The teacher will then sign in to brainpop and click PLAY MOVIE.

2. When the movie is finished, the teacher will click the "Next" button to proceed to page 2 of SMART Board lesson. The class will then discuss the vocabulary terms on the page. When finished, the teacher will click the "Next" button to proceed to page 3.

3. On page 3, the class will discuss the answer to the question at the bottom of the page. When the class is satisfied that they have the correct answer, the teacher will then "erase" the bottom of the screen to reveal the answer, then click the "Next" button.

4. The class will answer the question and check their answers by clicking the sound links next to the answer they choose. If the sound is clapping, the answer is correct. The teacher will then drag down the shade to reveal why the answer is correct. When finished, the teacher will click the "Next" button.

5. The teacher will ask the question at the bottom of the page. The class will discuss what they think is the correct answer. The teacher will then click the "Click here for the answer" button.

6. On page 6, the teacher will "Pull" the tab to reveal the correct answer. If the class is correct, the teacher will press the sound button on the tab. When finished, the teacher will click the "Next" button.

7. The teacher will discuss possible answers to the m&m question on page 7 with the class. When the class is satisfied they have the correct answer, the teacher will "pull" the tab to reveal the correct answer.

8. The teacher will repeat the same procedure on page 8, lower the shade to reveal the correct fraction and click the "Next" button to go to page 9.

9. The students will take turns making their own combinations of m&m's and writing the corresponding fraction.

10. When all students have had a turn creating their own fractions, the teacher will click the "Next" button.

11. On page 10, the students will click the red m&m to play a fraction game on www.aaamath.com.

12. When the class is finished playing the math game on the internet, the teacher will split the class into pairs. The teacher will then hand out an m&m fraction sheet and a handful of m&m's to each pair of students. The students will then make fractions of each color m&m in their pile.

13. If desired, the students can then eat the m&m's at the end of the lesson.

Assessment

1. The students will be assessed on their ability to name fractions on pages 3 through 9 of the SMART Board lesson through teacher observation.

2. The students will be assessed on the accuracy of their finished m&m fraction hand outs.
