Objectives

  1. Students will read and discuss various forms of poetry.
  2. Students will take notes on the specific criterion of the poems introduced to them.
  3. Students will create their own poems as we learn about them.
  4. Students will learn vital poetic terms that will help them truly understand the poem's meaning.
  5. Students will create neat and creative books of poetry to share the poems they have done throughout the unit.

Duration

A class period of about 40-minutes for a two week time period

Procedure

  1. To introduce this unit, students write a paragraph about what poetry means to them.
  2. Students learn about haikus by taking notes on them .
  3. Students learn about odes and elegies (notes). Then students read an ode and elegy. For homework, students will write either an ode or elegy (Slide #3).
  4. Students learn about sonnets (notes). Then students listen to a sonnet from the SMART Board. Afterwards, students write a sonnet of their own.
  5. Students learn about diamante poems and create a classroom diamante poem together. This will later be used as an example when they write their own diamante poems.
  6. Students learn about poetic techniques that poets utilize in their poetry to better enhance their writing as well as get their meaning across.
  7. Students use the poetic techniques to read a poem in order to better understand what the speaker of the poem is saying.
  8. Students create books of selected poetry to display the four poems they've written throughout the unit!

Assessment

  • Students will be assessed daily by writing their own poems based on the class notes.
  • Students will be assessed based on the selected books of poetry (culminating project for this unit). Scoring guide for the poetry book can be found in the SMART Notebook file, slide # 7.

Materials

  • SMART Board Technology Set-up
  • English Textbook
  • Samples of each of the poems taught (students can use these as samples when they write their own poetry)
  • Poetic Techniques Cards
  • Supplies to make Selected Books of Poetry (crayons, markers, construction paper, and glue)
