Description

This unit will provide an introduction to American money. It is designed for students in second grade. Students will be introduced to coins up to a half dollar and bills up to a fifty dollar bill.

Duration

This lesson is designed to coincide with your money unit. It will take 5-10 days as an introductory unit for 45-60 minutes per session. Optionally it can be used as review over a 1-3 day period.

    Step-By-Step Procedure

    Step-by-Step Procedure is based on the pages in the slides from the SMART Notebook file.

    Page 1: Introduction Page

    Page 2: KWL Beginning. Begin by asking students what they know about money. Record all answers. Then move on to what they want to know about money. Again record all answers.

    Page 3: These are the vocabulary words the students will learn. Have students read aloud and ask if they know any of the meanings.

    Page 4: Click the link to watch an anticipatory video about money on Brainpopjr.com. Be sure to use the game and other links on the site.

    Page 5: Ask students to make observations about the penny. Then ask the questions on the page. Click on the coin to visit a related Wikipedia article. In the upper right corner is an eraser symbol which means that you can use the magic eraser to reveal the answer next to each question.

    Page 6: Ask students how much a penny is worth. How do we count pennies? Erase under the question to reveal the answer. Then practice counting by moving the pennies up into the purple.

    Page 7: Ask students to make observations about the nickel. Then ask the questions on the page. Click on the coin to visit a related Wikipedia article.

    Page 8: Ask students how much a nickel is worth. How do we count nickels? Erase under the question to reveal the answer. Then practice counting by moving the nickels up into the purple.

    Page 9: Ask students to make observations about the dime. Then ask the questions on the page. Click on the coin to visit a related Wikipedia article.

    Page 10: Ask students how much a dime is worth. How do we count dimes? Erase under the question to reveal the answer. Then practice counting by moving the dimes up into the purple.

    Page 11: Ask students to make observations about the quarter. Then ask the questions on the page. Click on the coin to visit a related Wikipedia article.

    Page 12: Ask students how much a quarter is worth. How do we count quarters? Erase under the question to reveal the answer. Then practice counting by moving the quarters up into the purple.

    Page 13: Ask students to make observations about the half dollar. Then ask the questions on the page. Click on the coin to visit a related Wikipedia article.

    Page 14: Ask students how much a half dollar is worth. How do we count half dollars? Erase under the question to reveal the answer. Then practice counting by moving the half dollars up into the purple.

    Page 15: List the characteristics of each coin- Ask students to recall any details about the coins listed. Assist by reminding them and giving clues. Once finished compare the similarities and differences.

    Page 16: Put the Coins in Order- Ask students to use their manipulatives to put the coins in order. If you do not have manipulatives, click the attachments link and print off the money manipulatives file. Have one student come to the board and do it. Pull out the tab on the right for the answer.

    Page 17: Drag the Money- Have students drag the name of the coin to the correct picture.

    Page 18: Find the Money- Have students take turns searching for hidden money. Once they find the hidden coin, they should erase it and name it.

    Page 19: Presidential Coin Match- Have students drag the coin name to the correct president. Press check to have them self correct their answers.

    Page 20: How to Count Coins- Remind students how we skip count for each coin. Explain that we usually start will the largest coins. Move the quarter to the left side and ask how much we have. Next move the dime and repeat. Repeat the process for all the coins. For practice, click the link on the bottom to practice making money amounts.

    Page 21: Money Sort- Have students move one answer at a time into either the left or right side.

    Page 22: Coin Matching- Click the link to open the webpage. On the page, students need to match the money amount to the correct coins. Playing again will give different values.

    Page 23: Counting Coins- Students should count the coins in the box and write their answers in the green box. Use the eraser to reveal the answer to the right of each green box.

    Page 24: One Dollar Bill- Ask students to make observations about the one dollar bill. Click on the picture to view the front and back in large pictures. Click the large pictures to go back. Answer the questions together by writing the answers next to each question.

    Page 25: Five Dollar Bill- Ask students to make observations about the five dollar bill. Click on the picture to view the front and back in large pictures. Click the large pictures to go back. Answer the questions together by writing the answers next to each question.

    Page 26: Ten Dollar Bill- Ask students to make observations about the ten dollar bill. Click on the picture to view the front and back in large pictures. Click the large pictures to go back. Answer the questions together by writing the answers next to each question.

    Page 27: Twenty Dollar Bill- Ask students to make observations about the twenty dollar bill. Click on the picture to view the front and back in large pictures. Click the large pictures to go back. Answer the questions together by writing the answers next to each question.

    Page 28: Fifty Dollar Bill- Ask students to make observations about the fifty dollar bill. Click on the picture to view the front and back in large pictures. Click the large pictures to go back. Answer the questions together by writing the answers next to each question.

    Page 29: Name the Bills- Have students drag the bill names to the correct picture.

    Page 30: Presidential Bill Match- Have students match the bill name to the correct president. Press check to have students self correct.

    Page 31: Money Quiz- Have students answer the questions. Quiz is self correcting. This can be used as a center activity as well.

    Page 32: What Did You Learn- Ask students what they learned about money. Record the answers. Click on the link to go back to what they wanted to learn. If you have time, go over the things they were interested in that were not covered.

    Assessment

    Informal assessment opportunities are found after the introduction of each coin. Additionally page 15-23 and 29-32 are all interactive informal assessments. Additionally, open the attachments in the SMART Notebook file and print the counting coins worksheet. Point values to be determined by the teacher.
