Lesson Plan
Rotations and Rotational Symmetry by ECSDM
Course, Subject
Geometry (Next Generation), Math, Science & Technology, Mathematics (NYS P-12 Next Generation)
Grade Levels
Commencement, 10th Grade, 11th Grade
Description
This lesson will introduce students to rotational transformations and rotational symmetry.
Resource/Materials
8.3 - Rotations.ppt
8.3 - Rotations.doc
Duration
42-minutes
Learning Objectives
Students will be able to: define rotation, define rotational symmetry, rotate an object clockwise and counterclockwise about the origin, and determine the rotational symmetry of an object.
Materials
Computer, SMART Board, LCD Projector
Step-by-Step Procedure
The "do-now" is the first slide of the presentation and will be on the board when the students come in to class. This is a follow up to the previous lesson that involved point reflection and leads in to the lesson on rotations. The next slide has some definitions, then the rest are interactive. Questions will be posed on each slide and students will have the opportunity to rotate each figure on the SMART Board in order to answer the questions. The answers are under a box that can be slid down to progressively reveal each answer. Students at their seats can follow along by graphing the given figures and rotating their paper to find the answers.
Assessment
Students will have to complete a class work assignment following the SMART Notebook presentation. For students with 504 accommodations, they will be able to take the assignment home to finish.
