Duration
Four class periods - 1 hour each
Procedure
1. Click on the "Human Rights Activity" link under the support materials tab and complete the activities in the SMART Board lesson.
2. Next, teacher will introduce the class to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights using the following website:
http://www0.un.org/cyberschoolbus/humanrights/resources/universal.asp
3. Teacher will use SMART Board to guide whole class through a series of questions pertaining to each right.
4. Teacher will break class into groups of 2 and divide the 30 rights equally to each group.
5. In the computer lab, each group will use the websites from the Internet Hotlist to search for pictures to represent each right. The group will create a PowerPoint presentation with one right and one picture per page with a commentary about what life would be like if we did not have that particular right.
6. Each group will present their presentation to the class on the SMART Board (each student will present at least one slide).
Extension Activity:
7. Students will individually create a poster representing a right they feel they should have in school or at home. The poster will include the right, a drawing to illustrate the right, and a summary of why rights are important to all humans around the globe.
