Step-by-Step Procedures
Using the SMART Notebook An Introduction to Poetry, follow the steps below.
Day 1:
- First slide: Teacher will introduce poetry; answer the given questions orally.
- Second slide: Read the given poem and locate the rhyming words. Click on the "Dear Tim and Moby" picture to watch the "BrainPop" movie on poetry.
- Third slide: Read "Baseball Fever." As you read, discuss the following - metered verse, alliteration and end rhyme. Help students locate them in the poem. To help the students, drag down the pink screen and it will reveal the three types of poetry.
- Fourth slide: Read the poem "Waiting on the Bench" and discuss free verse.
- Fifth slide: Read Harry Chapin's "Cat's in the Cradle." Discuss the rhyme scheme of the song. Then explain to the students that this is a song. Then, play the song and have the students follow along.
Day 2:
- Sixth slide: Teacher introduces The Sneetches by Dr. Seuss. Answer the two questions on the page to predict what the poem is about.
- Seventh slide: Discuss each vocabulary word. Vocabulary words can be seen by dragging down the shade. Have the students use the words in a sentence (this can be done by having the students either orally state a sentence or they can write them down). Students should copy the vocabulary words into their notebooks.
- Eighth slide: Students and teacher discuss rhyme. Have students give oral examples. Discuss rhyme scheme. Read the given example from The Sneetches . Ask what the rhyme scheme is.
Day 3:
Teacher and students read The Sneetches by Dr. Seuss.
Day 4:
Hand out copies of Poetry Assessment SMART lesson document to students for use during this lesson.
- Ninth slide: After reading The Sneetches, complete the page with students on the SMART Board. Directions for completion of page is on the page itself. The correct answers can be located on the right of the line by using the "Magic Eraser" (see teacher note below on usage).
- Tenth slide: After reading, The Sneetches, students answer the comprehension questions by dragging the shade down. The correct answer is located by the number of each question, by using the "Magic Eraser.”
