The students will gain an understanding of simple addition facts.
The students will understand vocabulary associated with addition.

    Step-by-Step Procedure

    1. The teacher will introduce the concept of addition by clicking the spider web link to the www.brainpopjr.com website. The teacher will then sign into brainpopjr. and click the PLAY MOVIE icon.

    2. The teacher will then return to the Smartboard lesson and press the green arrow button at the bottom of the page.

    3. The teacher will read the vocabulary and definitions on page 2 and discuss these with the children. When finished, the teacher should click the green arrow button at the bottom of the page.

    4. The teacher can read the message on page 3 and then click the green arrow button.

    5. On the next page, the teacher will model how to add the jack-o-lanterns and bats already in the picture. Then, fill in the appropriate math sentence with the correct addends and sum using the marker from the smartboard. If the answer is correct (4+6=10), the teacher will then press the "Good Job" button on the side. When finished, the teacher should click the green arrow button.

    6. This page has items that can be added to the picture. The students can take turns adding a few of one halloween object to the picture (e.g. 4 cats), then fill in the blanks in the word problem and math sentence to match what they have done. When two different objects have been added (e.g. 4 skeletons and 5 cats), the class can add the two numbers together to find the sum for the math sentence. The objects, words and numbers can then be deleted and this sequence can be repeated until everyone has a turn. The teacher can then click the green arrow to move on to the next page of the lesson. The next page has the same format with a different scene and objects. Once again, the students can add objects until everyone has a turn.

    7. When the students have finished adding objects to the picture and completing the word problem and math sentence, the teacher can then click the button on the jack-o-lantern to play an addition game on the website www.amblesideprimary.com

    8. Once finished with the game on the website, the teacher will hand each student a piece of paper, a pencil and crayons. The students will then draw their own spooky picture with two halloween objects. The students will write the appropriate math sentence and label the math sentence with the words "addend" and "sum".

    9. The green arrow at the bottom of the last page will take the class back to the first page.

    Duration
