Procedure

Day 1:

To begin, students will explore examples of alliteration to create a class definition using SMART Notebook slides 2-5. For the first activity, the teacher will pass out scrap paper and display SMART Notebook slide 2 for students to brainstorm with a partner words to describe each clip art image.

The teacher will record student responses in the space provided on SMART Notebook slide 2.

After the responses are recorded, the teacher will display SMART Notebook slide 3 showing the answers.

For the second activity that continues to explore examples of alliteration, the teacher will display SMART Notebook slide 4 with five alliteration sentences.

For SMART Notebook slide 4, the teacher will instruct the students to analyze each sentence looking for the pattern.

The teacher will randomly select students to go to the SMART Board and highlight the pattern they discovered in each sentence.

At the completion of these first two activities, the teacher will instruct the class that they have just explored a literary device known as alliteration. At this point, the students will continue working with their partner to create a definition for alliteration. The teacher will display SMART Notebook slide 6 and record student created definitions. The teacher will then display the "official" definition. Students will copy each into their notebooks.

The teacher will then display SMART Notebook slide 7.

Students will follow stated directions and copy each sentence into their notebooks to identify the alliteration.

The teacher will review answers with the class.

The teacher will then display SMART Notebook slide 8.

Students will follow the stated directions to create a sentence with a minimum of three examples of alliteration using their first names. This activity may be completed for homework.

Days 2-4:

In order to review examples of alliteration, the teacher will display SMART Notebook slide 9. Students will copy the sentences that include examples of alliteration. Randomly selected students will follow the stated directions and go the SMART Board to select the correct examples.

The teacher will then display SMART Notebook slide 10 to explain the expectations of the culminating activity. For this activity, students are to work in groups to create an Alliteration Alphabet using white, three inch adding machine paper(as modeled on the slide). Each group is to create a sentence for each letter of the alphabet that includes a minimum of three examples of alliteration and a colorful illustration. The teacher will then display the rubric on SMART Notebook slide 11 and give a copy to each group.
