Lesson Plan
Sorting by One Attribute by ECSDM
Subject
Math, Science & Technology
Grade Levels
Elementary, Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten
Step-by-Step Procedure
- Activate prior knowledge of the students by asking them what sorting is and how you could do it.
- Write the ideas down and discuss them. Include appropriate vocabulary at this time. Tell the students the correct mathematical terms for some of the ideas they are sharing.
- Read a book about sorting such as...Sorting by Karen Bryant-Mole or Patterns by Karen Bryant-Mole. Continue to add new vocabulary terms as needed.
- Read the text and then go back and discuss the pictures. Elicit information about the pictures from the students
- Using a manipulatives such as buttons, shapes, colored blocks, colored counting chips etc. demonstrate as a large group how to sort by one attribute.
- Divide the class into small groups and work with each group to be sure that each child has an understanding of the expectations. Using buttons for advanced students you can group by how many holes they have, size, shape, color or design. In this way, you can do more than one demonstration for the advanced or you can use colored counters and blocks for children having difficulty.
- Allow the students to go back to their tables and work alone or with a partner to practice what they saw in the demonstration.
- Have the students journal what they have sorted. If possible, ask them to write a sentence about what they did.
- Walk around the room as the students are journaling and see how the students are doing. Ask the students questions to stimulate journal writing.
- Bring the students back together as a group to discuss the lesson. Ask questions about what they saw, figured out, expected and how easy or difficult is was to do. Encourage the use of mathematical vocabulary during the discussion. Make a T chart, Venn diagram, or list that reflects the discussion including the vocabulary terms.
- At this time, you can use one of the attached websites and other activities for follow up or they can be used as a center or as reinforcement at another time.
Description
This lesson is to introduce sorting, primarily by color. The students will have several opportunities to sort using color and then other attributes.

Duration of Lesson
This lesson can be taught in approximately 30- 40 minutes. It can be used as a review and can be done as a center with a small group.
Learning Objectives
Students will be able to:
use vocabulary such as Sort, Attribute, Chart, and Data.
sort manipulatives in the class by one or two attributes.
use technology to sort .
draw or write a representation of the sorting activity in a journal.
make a true statement about the groups of manipulatives they sorted.
Materials
SMART Board set up
Classroom or computer lab computer access
Journal and crayons/pencil
A variety of manipulatives for the students to sort
Assessment
The student will sort using the SMART Board and computer activities.
The student will be able to draw a representation (Venn Diagram or T chart) of manipulatives they sorted.
The student will be able to use appropriate math vocabulary to explain the journal representation to a partner or group of classmates.
The student will be able to use the manipulatives in a way that indicates an understanding of the sorting activity.
