Grade Levels

Commencement, 9th Grade, 10th Grade, 11th Grade

Description

Students will critically read an article about external fertilization and answer pertinent questions. In addition, they will use the information to synthesize the differences between internal and external fertilization.

Goals

  • To teach students the importance of reproduction in the maintenance of life
  • To teach students about the two types of fertilization - internal and external
  • Objectives

At the conclusion of the lesson, students will be able to:

    • Summarize and reflect upon the importance of reproduction, utilizing SMART page 6
    • Explain the difference between internal and external reproduction
    • Evaluate articles and extract details and elements critical to reading comprehension

    Materials

  • SMART Board
  • LCD projector
  • Internet
  • student copies of the article "Frog 'Pirates' Find Sneaky Way to Fertilize Eggs"
  • student copies of any slides of the presentation, as deemed appropriate by the instructor
  • Article: "Frog 'Pirates Find Sneaky Way to Fertil
  • Questions: "Frog 'Pirates' Find Sneaky Way to Fert
  • external fertilization.notebook
  • external fertilization.pdf
  • Introduction

Students will begin with a "Do Now" consisting of reviewing the terms by explaining them in his/her own words:
  • sexual reproduction
  • gametes
  • fertilization
  • haploid
  • diploid
  • internal fertilization
  • external fertilization
    • The instructor will then begin a class discussion to check the students' level of understanding of the concepts, and proceed accordingly with the SMART lesson page 3, to check a sampling of the terms.

    Development

Students will then be given a copy of the article, "Frog 'Pirates' Find Sneaky Way to Fertilize Eggs", and then it will simultaneously be put on the SMART Board. Students will read the article and highlight/underline key concepts/information. The teacher will then ask students to share what they deem important by coming up to the SMART Board to highlight the key parts of the article (SMART page 4), one section at a time, rotating who goes up to the board. Students will then participate in an interactive quiz based upon the article.

    Evaluation

Students will be given a copy of the "T-chart" on "Internal vs. External Fertilization" (SMART page 5) and asked to fill it in alone. Then it will be collected and completed interactively on the SMART Board. All handouts will be collected and graded. In addition, the interactive quiz will be monitored by the instructor and assessed in a checklist-type format. Additionally, a unit exam will cover this material.
