Step-by- Step Procedure
- The teacher will introduce the lesson by showing a large bag of goldfish crackers.
- Students will estimate the number of crackers in the bag, and the teacher will write their answers on chart paper.
- The teacher will explain the importance of counting on, in order to find the total number of goldfish crackers.
- The teacher will model how to count the crackers one by one. Together, they will check their answers.
- Each student will receive a small bag of goldfish crackers and a worksheet (SMART Notebook file slide # 8 - Goldfish Worksheet ) to estimate the number of crackers that they have in their own bag. Students will write their estimation, and will be able to count to check their answers.
- Students will count their goldfish and record their answer on the worksheet. Students will be given stickers that will represent the goldfish. They need to place one sticker on the page for every goldfish they counted. After they place their stickers on the page, they can eat the goldfish.
- Students will work with a partner to compare who has more or less goldfish crackers.
- Students will use numbers to label the stickers on the paper.
- Students will practice counting and comparing numbers, by using the Smart Notebook Counting file (see attached file).
- Directions for using SMART Notebook Counting file:
- Slide 2: Student will drop and drag the candied apples and pumpkins into their correct basket. Once they have completed the sorting activity they will count the totals in each basket, and compare the results.
- Slide 3: Students will count the total number of apples in the tree. After they count the total they will press the text "How many apples are in the tree?" this text is linked to a counting activity on the Internet. Students will come up to the SMART Board to work on the online counting activity.
- Slide 4: Students will count the objects on the page and drag the correct number to the box provided next to the object.
- Slide 5: Student will drag the correct written number with it's partner.
- Slide 6: Student will count the total number of goldfish, seahorse, and green fish. Students will come up to the SMART Board and record the totals on the slide.
- Slide 7: Students will use the totals from the previous slide to complete the picture graph. The objects have been infinite cloned to make the activity easier.
- Slide 8: Worksheet that is used at the start of the lesson.
- Slide 9: Assessment - students will complete the matching worksheet (each student will be provided with a copy of this notebook page).
