Introduction to Edgar Allen Poe by ECSDM

Subject

English Language Arts (2005)

Grade Levels

Intermediate, 8th Grade

Description

This lesson is written as the introductory lesson before reading Edgar Allen Poe's "The Raven", teaching alliteration and internal rhyme (I always do this right around Halloween). It is targeted to an 8th grade, 15:1 special education Literacy class. This lesson involves a do now that instructs students to answer the following questions: "How do you decide if you want to see a new movie that's coming out?" and "What strategies do you use to pick a magazine or book that you want to read?", a SMART Board presentation using a slide show from various Poe sites, a scavenger hunt worksheet that students fill in as the class goes through the Poe sites and a SMART Board multiple-choice activity as closure.

Duration

This lesson is designed for one, 46-minute period, as the introduction to a four-day lesson.

Learning Objective

Students will apply a wide range of strategies to comprehend, interpret, and appreciate Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Raven."

Materials

  • SMART Board notebook lesson
  • Various internet sites
  • Copy of Edgar Allen Poe Scavenger Hunt.

  • Step-by-Step Procedure

    1. Do Now (Slide 1): Answer the following: how do you decide if you want to see a new movie coming out? What strategies do you use to pick a magazine or book to read?
    2. Teacher will introduce the idea of reading strategies by talking briefly about how readers explore a text before reading itself and will then elicit responses from students, asking them to share their strategies when they choose a movie or a book.
    3. Continuing from the anticipatory set, the teacher will model how she chooses a book when she goes to the school library. (Slide 2) Teacher will hold up a book about Edgar Allen Poe and ask students to tell her what they can find out about him from the book. Teacher will then ask students to tell her everything they know or have heard about him. Teacher will write students’ responses on the board.
    4. (Slide 3) Teacher will hand out the Edgar Allen Poe Scavenger Hunt as she tells students that they will be learning more about Mr. Poe from some different websites and that while they go through each website, they will be on a scavenger hunt for information. Teacher will have different students read the scavenger hunt questions aloud before beginning on the websites. Teacher will ask if anyone has questions and, once everyone is ready, will start going through each website (each picture on the third slide is a link to a different website).
    5. Teacher will skim through each website with students and assist them in finding information for the scavenger hunt. As the teacher leads students through the websites, she will model strategies for finding information (i.e. “I see that the headers on this biography say his life, his works, etc. What do we need to know for our scavenger hunt?”). As teacher reads information, she will connect new information to prior information students gave her about what they knew about Poe. As students complete the scavenger hunt, teacher and students will review and discuss everything they have learned about Poe and the strategies they used to find the information (slide 4 provides "hints" with stars for all information to complete the scavenger hunt, if needed).
    6. (Slide 5) Teacher will ask volunteers to go to the SMART Board and click on the correct answer for each multiple-choice question. Teacher will remind students to refer back to their scavenger hunt if they don't know an answer.

    Assessment

    • Correct completion of the Scavenger Hunt
    • SMART Board multiple-choice questions
