Duration of Lesson
The lesson will last approximately 40 minutes
Learning Objectives
- The student will be able to count by rote 1 to 5.
- The student will be able to use fingers to count 1 to 5.
- The student will be able to identify the number words one, two ,three, four and five.
- The student will be able to use manipulatives to show a number 1 to 5.
- The student will be able to match a symbol to the correct number 1 to 5.
- The student will be able to use appropriate math vocabulary (ie. count, number, set & number words,.).
Materials
- A book for children that relates to counting such as:
-Five Little Monkeys
-Five Little Ducks
-How Dinosaurs Count to Ten
-Two Ways to Count to Ten
- Number cards to introduce number words.
The card should have the number, number word and correct number of shapes/symbols and be large enough for the class to see. Small size cards can also be made and used for centers to reinforce the concept independently.
- SMART Board set up for large group instruction
- Paper, Pencils, Crayons, Markers ( for individual books they will make)
- Manipulatives (such as linking cubes, counting chips, buttons etc.)
- Computer access for entire class for follow up with web sites (if appropriate)
Step by Step Procedure
- The teacher will read a story that includes counting to the class. This reading will include counting and discussion within the text of the book.
- The teacher will use the counting (number) cards to continue the discussion with the class as well as introduce the number words. The class can put then in order, use them to identify number words, do matching activities etc.
- Using the interactive SMART Board the teacher will continue to engage students in counting activities such as the web sites games from Count Us In as well as the teacher-generated activities for the SMART Board including Star Match, Word Match and Count and Sort.
- The student will use a manipulative to show a designated number (this can be done large group, small group, individually or as partners depending on the needs of the students)
- The teacher will circulate around the room asking questions and discussing the activities the children are engaged in. The teacher can also be give directions as to how the sets of manipulatives should be changed and/or matched,
- The teacher will collect manipulatives and give out the materials needed to complete the number book.
- The teacher will have a sample of the Number Book for the students to see. The teacher will explain the book and model how it will be written. The students can draw shapes they want in their books and then add the number word. The student should be able to put the book in order and the teacher will check and assemble the book with string, staples or ribbon.
Assessment
The students will make a book of numbers and symbols 1 to 5.
The book should include a title page "My Number Book" or "Counting 1 to 5" etc.
Each page will include an number, corresponding number word and correct number of symbols/shapes, pages should be assembled in ascending order from 1 to 5.
