Target Audience
The target audience for this lesson is Kindergarten and First grade. The lesson is designed to reinforce patterning skills for Kindergarten and to serve as a review of patterns for a First grade class.
Duration of Lesson
The duration of this lesson is approximately 40 minutes
Learning Objectives
The student will be able to continue a pattern using the SMART Board.
The student will be able to use vocabulary terms such as pattern, patterning, AB pattern, repeat and repetition
The student will be able to use manipulatives (ie linking cubes, colored chips, buttons etc.) to make an AB pattern.
The student will be able to journal the pattern using an "I can" statement.
Materials
Each student in the class will need
access to a SMART Board as a large group
manipulatives such as linking cubes, buttons, shapes, colored chips etc.
a journal
crayons
pencil
Procedure
1) The teacher will introduce the lesson by asking the students "What is a pattern?
2) The teacher will make a list of the appropriate vocabulary and responses then highlight/underline the vocabulary words.
3) Using the answers solicited from the students the teacher will guide the discussion toward an acceptable consensus (such as a group of objects that can be put in a special order so the repeat over and over).
4) The teacher will demonstrate a pattern by using the children (ie, boy, girl, boy, girl and form a line) Any children left over can actively participate in the discussion and demonstration as a special helper.
5) The teacher will elicit what makes this a pattern... repetition.. and discuss it.
6) The teacher can then ask the student to look around the room to find other patterns (several can be put in place prior to the lesson).
7) The teacher can then demonstrate the same concept on the SMART Board using several prearranged pattern activities or websites.
8) The students will take turns coming to the SMART Board to complete or add to a pattern.
9) The students will then go back to their seats to practice the concept using manipulatives to build their pattern.
10) The teacher will circulate around the room assisting students and asking questions about the patterns they are making (ie What makes it a patterns? If I change this, is it still a pattern? How can you make this a different pattern? How can I stop the pattern? etc)
11) The students will then discuss in small groups how they made the pattern and why it is a pattern (this can be done as a large group, small group or partners to meet the needs of the children in the class).
12) The students will then be asked to journal their pattern. Using pictures and words to represent the pattern they made.
13) Each student must use the vocabulary learned ( from the list) to write an "I can" statement in the journal (ie I can make (build, create,, plan, design, etc.) a pattern, I can repeat shapes. I can compare patterns. etc.)
Assessment
The student should be able to complete an AB pattern independently using at least one type of manipulative.
The student should be able to use appropriate vocabulary to write an "I can..." statement in a journal.
The student should be able to represent their AB pattern as a picture in a journal.
