Course, Subject
Algebra I (Next Generation), Algebra II (Next Generation), Math, Science & Technology, Mathematics (NYS P-12 Next Generation)
Grade Levels
Commencement, 9th Grade, 10th Grade
Description
This lesson will introduce students to functions, input-output tables, and the vertical line test.
Resource/Materials
B.2.1.Functions and their Graphs.ppt
ws 2.1 functions.doc
Duration
42-minutes
Learning Objectives
Students will be able to:
create input-output tables for a given function
decide whether a given table of values is that of a function
decide whether a given graph is a function
Materials
Computer
SMART Board
LCD projector
Step-by-Step Procedure
The "do-now" is the first slide of the presentation and will be on the board when the students come in to class. This will reinforce previously learned skills that are needed for this lesson. The first slide introduces functions, input-output tables, domain and range. Next students have the opportunity to decide whether given values with tables are those of functions and further practice by creating input-output tables for given equations. The last slide introduces the concept of the vertical line test and why it is useful.
After the presentation, students will use the remainder of the period to complete the class work assignment and practice what we have discussed. The teacher will walk around to keep everyone on track and check for understanding of the material.
Assessment
Students will have to complete a class work assignment following the PowerPoint presentation. For students with 504 accommodations, they will be able to take the assignment home to finish.
