OBJECTIVE

Students will...

  • Learn the different characteristics of the left and right hemispheres of the brain.
  • Develop a series of drawings based on the upside down drawing technique from the book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards.

PROCEDURE

Day 1: GOAL: Introduction to Upside Down Drawing...

  • Open Lesson with and introduction to drawing upside down on the SMART Board
  • Upon completion of the SMART Board lesson, have students prepare themselves with a pencil and a piece of 9X12 white drawing paper.
  • Pass out a packet of cartoons to each student.
  • Have students peruse the cartoon packet and select a cartoon that they would like to learn to draw.
  • Students should then turn the cartoon picture upside down.
  • Students should begin to draw their cartoon upside down.

Description

An activity referenced from the book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, by Betty Edwards. Students will develop their drawing skills by copying an image upside down.

DURATION

  • Three, 45-minute class periods.
  • MATERIALS/RESOURCES

    • Pencil, Eraser, 9X12 White Drawing Paper, Sharpie Marker fine point (black).
    • SMART Board, LCD Projector, Laptop, SMART Board Notebook, Microsoft Paint.
    • Art Print: Igor Stravinsky by Pablo Picasso.
    • (Print can be obtained through the internet or found in the book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brainby Betty Edwards).
    • Images of Cartoons: Images need to fit to page on an 8.5X11 copy paper.
    • (Cartoon pictures can be obtained through the internet or coloring books).
    • Book: Drawing on the Right Side on the Brain by Betty Edwards
    • (Published in 1979, revised 1999).

    Day 2

    GOAL: Continue Sketching Upside Down...

    • Students will continue to sketch cartoons upside down until they have completed at least two or more drawings.

    DAY 3

    GOAL: Draw upside down using a marker...

    • Students will select a cartoon that they have practiced drawing in pencil.
    • Students will redraw the cartoon again upside down using marker.
    • Once completed students should sign their name at the bottom and mount the artwork on colored construction paper.
    • Students will then complete a reflection/rubric form.

    ASSESSMENT

    • Teacher evaluation of finished artwork
    • Completed Rubric/Reflection Form
