The Respiratory System by ECSDM

Description
Scientists have studied the human body for hundreds of years and have yet to unlock some of its mysteries. This lesson has been designed to introduce sixth graders to what we know about the respiratory system and how it works. Through this lesson, students will learn about the different parts of the respiratory system. They will also learn the locations of these parts and will have to create a graphic organizer to put in their notes.

Learning Objectives
When given a diagram, students will be able to label the parts of the respiratory system.
Materials
- SMART Notebook lesson
- SMART Board
- Projector
- Computer
- Internet
- Human body model or diagram of the respiratory system
- Respiratory system diagram worksheet
Procedure
- Prior to this lesson, students should have defined the vocabulary words in their notebooks.
- Starting on page two of the SMART Board lesson, have students match their vocabulary words with the definitions.
- Students will use the eraser on the SMART Board to see if they were correct.
- Take out a model of the human body or a diagram.
- Starting on page three of the SMART Board lesson, discuss the job of the nose and throat during respiration.
- Using the model/diagram, point out where the nasal cavity and epiglottis would be located.
- Turn to page four of the SMART Board lesson.
- Discuss the jobs of the trachea, larynx and vocal cords.
- Use the model/diagram to show where they are located.
- Turn to page five of the SMART Board lesson.
- Discuss the jobs of the bronchi and alveoli.
- Use the model/diagram to show where they are located.
- Turn to page six of the SMART Board lesson.
- Discuss the job of the diaphragm.
- Use the model/diagram to show where it would be located.
- Turn to page seven of the SMART Board lesson.
- Review with the students where each part of the respiratory is located. Use the eraser on the SMART Board to reveal the answers.
- Show the respiratory system video from BrainPop.com and take the quiz at the end of the video.
- Have students label a diagram of the respiratory system to keep in their notes.
- When students are finished, they may play the game on page eight of the SMART Board lesson.
Assessment
Students will label a diagram of the respiratory system.
