Description

During this lesson, students will analyze the causes of the Age of Exploration. They will be introduced to the explorers of the 1400s to 1600s and review the routes that traveled. Students will be able to evaluate the appeal of exploration from the perspective of social, economic and political points of view.

Objectives

  • Students will be able to describe the causes of the Age of Exploration. They will be able to identify the major trade routes and countries involved in exploration. They will be able to identify the major explores.
  • Students will understand concept of motto "Glory, God, and Gold", as well as review vocabulary for the content area..
  • Students will be able to interact with following the routes of the explorers..

Duration

Two class periods, 42 minutes each.

Materials

SMART Board and SMART Notebook software (if unavailable, please use a projector in conjunction with a white/chalk board.)

Procedures

  • The teacher will address class.
  • Students will take homework/packet/ or paper and pencil in preparation for reviewing material.
  • Teacher will open .notebook Page 1 that contains the Do Now and objective for the day:
    Do Now: List 3 reasons behind the Age of Exploration.
  • Teacher will then move to interactive slide on Causes of Exploration to elicit responses from class reviewing the motto "Glory, God and Gold." From here, teacher will move to next page with outline map and interactive boats. Several students will come up to the board and trace the routes of different explorers using interactive boat.
  • After routes have been traced, the teacher will open link to PowerPoint on slide 3 by clicking on the paperclip icon by one of the boats.
    Students will interact with lesson either on the white/chalk board or the SMART Board and write the definitions of or explanation for any explorer/vocabulary words.
    Students will then work in pairs and discuss w/examples meanings of words.
  • Class will discuss slides and comment on methods used by explorers as we go through PowerPoint.

Assessment

Student understanding of the objectives will be assessed through use of a test on The Age of Exploration which includes map work and constructed response questions. This assessment is attached. See Test on Exploration in the Materials section.
