Anticipatory Set/Input
- Ask the students if they have a plant at home? Then discuss what plants need in order for them to grow.
- Watch the BrainPOP Jr. - Parts of a Plant video. Encourage the students to take notes in their Science notebook. As you are watching the video, pause the video when the pause button on the bottom of the screen turns red. At these times, a question will be shown on the right hand side of the screen. Ask the students the question, and see if the students can answer the question, before continuing the video.
- After the video is finished, there is an easy and hard quiz the class can take to review what they learned from the video.
Modeling
- Review the content from the video by asking the students to label the plant diagram on the first Notebook page of the SMART Board Plant Diagram file. Also, ask them what two things are needed for plants to grow.
- Ask the students to describe the function of what each part of the plant does. Next, show the students the second page of the SMART Board Plant Diagram file. Have the students copy the diagram and the information about each part of the plant as well as what is needed for plants to grow.
Closure
- Have the students share their 3-Dimensional models of a plant with each other.
- You can also explain to the students that they will be planting seeds and growing their own plant. They will observe their plant as it grows, and look for the parts of the plant.
Assessment
- Have the class take the easy and hard quiz after the video to assess their understanding.
- Check the students' diagrams to make sure they labeled the parts of their plant correctly. Ask the students to describe the purpose of each part of the plant.
