Grade Levels
Intermediate, 6th Grade
Description
This is a 6th grade Home and Career Skills classroom.
Students will review their knowledge about fractions. Students will apply their fraction knowledge when reading recipes.
Objectives
- Students will review fractions most common in cooking - 1/4, 1/3,1/2 and 1 cup with 100% accuracy
- Students will identify the best measuring tool to use when measuring a dry or liquid ingredient with 80% accuracy.
Procedures
Teacher will use the "Measurement" SMART Notebook file to teach the lesson.
- Slide 1: Go over information the students will learn (Objectives).
- Slide 2: Discuss different types of measuring tools used in a kitchen.
- Slide 3: Review fractions - have students drag the fraction to the appropriate circle it matches
- Slide 4: Write the fraction in the fraction maker, then put it over the correct picture
- Slide 5: Review measuring tools and what types of foods go into measuring utensils.
- Slide 6: Review cooking abbreviations. Have students write these down in their notebooks
- Slide 7: Go over measuring rules: On the screen there will be a questions, students will then tap the flip box for the correct answers.
- Slide 8: Drag the liquid ingredients into the liquid measuring cups. If a dry ingredient is pulled into the measuring cup, it will disappear (indicating a wrong answer). If the word remains on the liquid measuring cup, then it is correct.
- Slide 9: Multiplying fractions for recipes when increasing original yield amount (doubling recipe). Students will use the center of the slide as workspace to figure out the math. To check their answers they can erase the area to the right of the pictures to obtain the correct answer.

Assessment
The following will be used as an assessment:
- Class discussion on fractions with slide 3 with 80% accuracy in their notebooks.
- Students will generate fractions using the fraction maker on slide 4 with 80% accuracy.
- Measuring both dry and liquid ingredients in the kitchens using typical cooking utensils with 90% accuracy using the "Are You Ready" worksheet.
