Hello, Guest!

Lesson Plan

Genetic Technology

Grade Levels

Commencement, 9th Grade, 10th Grade

Procedure

1. Class discussion about genetically modified organisms (transgenic organisms) centered around Glofish, a genetically enhanced species of freshwater fish. Glofish are fluorescent fish where the fluorescence is produced by a naturally occurring protein gene derived from marine organisms.

2. Website exploration of University of Delaware, Genetic Technology Interactive Resource (as a class on digital projector or on individual computers)

3. Begin Genetic Technology Brochure Project

Genetic Technology Brochure

Students will choose a topic in the field of genetic technology to be used in the design and creation of an informational brochure. Students may choose from the following:

  • Cloning
  • DNA fingerprintingRecombinant DNA technology
  • Genetically Modified (GM) foods
  • Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO)
  • Gene therapy
  • Stem cell research

Directions for creating brochure:

  • Conduct research (internet or other resources) on the particular topic.
  • Prepare a typed brochure.
  • Make headings on each page as shown in sample layout.
  • Provide information under each heading.
  • Be sure to include Bibliography, For More Information, etc. see sample layout (all elements shown in sample layout)

Peer Review

Students will review brochures from 3 classmates (not his or her own) and answer the following questions in regard to each one:

Question 1: What is the topic being discussed in this brochure?
Question 2: What are three interesting facts presented in this brochure?
Question 3: State one way this type of genetically technology affects living things (including people) in the world.
Question 4: What suggestion(s) do you have that may help improve this brochure?

Duration

~3 - 50 min. periods (or modify as needed)

Computer Lab/Library Time needed

Description

Students will conduct internet research to design and create an informational brochure regarding different aspects of Genetic Technology.

During this lesson students will be guided to design and create a computer generated brochure which presents information about a selected issue involved in genetic technology such as: cloning, GMO’s, recombinant DNA, etc.
