Description

Many early civilizations developed on deltas at the mouths of major rivers or in river valleys such as the Nile, Indus, Huang He and the Tigris and Euphrates. Throughout, the history of these civilization the one common factor has been the importance of these rivers. Living along rivers or at deltas has brought prosperity and suffering to people.

Describe four advantages and two disadvantages to locating a civilization on a delta or in a river valley.

Objective

Students will be able to analyze the documents given and construct an essay.

Duration

Five days - 45 minute periods

Materials

Hard Copy of DBQ on River Civilizations, SMART Board, LCD projector, lap top computer

Procedure

Day One:

  1. Students will be introduced to the concept of a Document Based Question Essay.

  2. Students will view the DBQ on the SMART Board.

  3. Students will be given their own hard copy of the DBQ on River Civilizations.

  4. Teacher will introduce the historical context.

  5. Teacher will introduce the task.

  6. Teacher will review the key vocabulary words: advantages and disadvantages

  7. Teacher will introduce the concept of different types of documents.

  8. Students will turn to document one.

  9. Teacher will have students look at the document, read the questions, analyze the document and answer the questions in complete sentences.

  10. Teacher will explain to the students that (1) means that the question is equal to one point.

  11. Teacher will model answers on the SMART Board.

Day Two and Three:

  1. Teacher will review the key vocabulary words: advantages and disadvantages.

  2. Teacher will review the task.

  3. Teacher will introduce document two.

  4. Students will look at the document, read the questions, analyze the document and answer in complete sentences.

  5. Teacher will model answering the document on the SMART Board.

  6. Teacher will introduce document three, four, five, six, seven and eight.

  7. Students will look at the document, read the questions, analyze the documents and answer in complete sentences.

  8. Students will be introduce to concept of "scaffolding" using all or some of the documents to complete the task.

  9. Teacher will model on the SMART Board.

Day Four:

  1. Teacher will review the task.

  2. Students will complete the graphic organizer on the SMART Board and on their hard copy.

  3. Teacher will model the introduction of a paragraph on the SMART Board.

  4. Students will write their introduction on a sheet of loose leaf paper.

  5. Teacher will model the body of their essay on the SMART Board .

  6. Students will write their body.

  7. Teacher will model the conclusion of the essay on the SMART Board.

  8. Students will write their conclusion.

Day Five:

  1. Teacher will review the components needed to write an excellent essay

  2. Students will complete their final copy of the essay.
