Description
During this lesson, students will analyze how Christianity affected the Roman Empire. Students will be able to evaluate appeal of Christianity as compared to other religions.

Objectives
- Students will be able to describe and analyze the Roman attitude towards various religions and the teachings of Jesus.
- Students will compare and contrast the similarities and differences of Christianity to initial polytheistic religion of Rome.
- Students will be able to evaluate appeal of Christianity as compared to other religions.
Duration
One class period, 42 minutes

Procedures
- The teacher will address class.
- Students will take out paper and pencil in preparation for taking notes.
- Teacher will open Roman Empire .xbk Page 1 that contains the Do Now and objective for the day:
Do Now: List 3 reasons that the Romans believed in more than one god. After five minutes, one student will come up to board and list responses of class.

- Teacher will then use outline of triangle on p. 2 and eliciting responses from class, fill in upper and lower classes. From here, teacher will review idea of Roman Gods and similarity to Greek Gods and explain how poor Romans responded to appeal of Christianity.
Objective: Understand the appeal and spread of Christianity.
- Refer to Roman Empire.ppt/.xbk Page 2:
Students will interact with lesson either on the white/chalk board or the SMART Board and write the definitions of the vocabulary words.
Students will then work in pairs and discuss w/examples meanings of words.
- Class will check their vocabulary by coming up to the board and using .xbk p. 6 of the smart lesson or interact by writing or matching words on either on the white/chalk board or the SMART Board to highlight and underline.
Assessment
Student understanding of the objectives will be assessed through use of a thematic essay on the Roman Empire and the Spread of Christianity using the rubric for the NYS Regents. Students will complete a guided reading from their textbook on Christianity and the Roman Empire.
