Description

This detailed lesson plan gives students the opportunity to develop knowledge of and skills in using nonstandard units of measurement. It is developed around "Ladybug on the Move" by Richard Fowler. Several other lesson plans are presented as well.

NY-1.MD.2 Measure the length of an object using same-size “length units” placed end to end with no gaps or overlaps. Express the length of an object as a whole number of “length units.”

NY-2.MD.1 Measure the length of an object to the nearest whole by selecting and using appropriate tools such as rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks, and measuring tapes.

NY-2.MD.9 Generate measurement data by measuring lengths of several objects to the nearest whole unit, or by making repeated measurements of the same object. Present the measurement data in a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in whole-number units.

K.MD.1 Describe measurable attributes of objects, such as length or weight. Describe several measurable attributes of a single object.
