Research Paper - Students will write a research paper on the function of jealousy and envy in either the Sonnets or Othello using literary criticism.
Learning Context/ Introduction
Students will study Shakespearean Sonnets and Othello from the perspective of how emotions, specifically jealousy and envy, affect and influence characters' actions.
Goals:
To read and analyze literature on a critical level, as well as literal and interpretive levels.
To write critical analyses of the literary works read.
To write creatively using the literary works read as models.
To engage in discussions that will allow students to see the relevance of the literature to their lives.
Duration
Four to five weeks
Essential Question
- How did Shakespeare use literary techniques to express emotions in the Sonnets?
- How did Shakespeare make use of literary devices such as soliloquy, aside, and dramatic irony to convey characters' emotions in Othello ?
- How do jealousy and envy affect people?
- What are the consequences of acting on these emotions?
Procedure
The unit will begin with a study of the Sonnets. Students will be introduced to various Sonnets that deal with the theme of jealousy and envy. Individual lessons will teach the students how to analyze a poem. Upon completion of the Sonnets, the class will begin its study of Othello. The play will be read aloud in class, and the lessons will focus on literary devices used to convey characters' emotions and the consequences of their emotions.
Unit 1
Reflections and Feedback
Students will be asked to write a reflection paper focusing on the essential questions and their own learning during this unit.

Original Sonnets, Talk Shows (Original skit w/ written script), Shakespearean Love Letters, Reading Comprehension Homework Assignments, In-class group assigments, essay exams.
