Lesson Plan
Giggle Poetry by ECSDM
Subject
English Language Arts (2005)
Description
Students are intimidated and bored with traditional and historic poetry. Humor is an excellent way to engage seventh graders. The website Giggle Poetry offers many learning activities for the class as a whole or for individual students. Students will listen to hysterical poetry as a whole group. Depending on the number of computers, students can work with partners or groups to explore and evaluate different types of poetry.

Objectives
- As a whole group, students will listen to hysterical poems from the anthology If Kids Ruled the School by Bruce Lansky.
- In collaborative groups, students will explore and evaluate different types of poetry from the eleven offered at the Giggle Poetry site.
- Individually, students will create their own poetry after completing the Poetry Exploration and Evaluation worksheet.
- In front of the class, students will present their poem or a skit from Poetry Theater that they discovered.
Learning Activities
- When students enter the teacher or a volunteer student will read some poems from the book, If Kids Ruled the School.
- When students are giggling, the teacher will hand out the Poem Exploration and Evaluation worksheet and rubric (see below). As a class, the teacher and students will read over directions and ask clarifying questions.
- Students will then be broken up into groups, and assigned a computer with bookmarks at Giggle Poetry. As students work cooperatively, the teacher will facilitate the groups by observing and asking guiding questions like "How does your mood change when you read this poem? Why did you choose this type of poetry? How can you connect to this poem/subject?"
- After exploring the eleven different types of poetry, students will choose a type and try to create their own using the How to Write Poetry instructions.
- At the conclusion of class or the next day students will present their created poem or perform a skit in the Poetry Theater.
