Description

In this web-based interactive resource, students classify objects by color, students recognize, describe, and extend patterns of color, and students analyze how both repeating and growing patterns are generated.

While using this manipulative, students will:

  • Describe a color pattern - Starting from the upper left corner of the workspace, use words to describe the sequence of colors.
  • Extend the pattern - Click on a button with a question mark and then click on the appropriate color to extend the pattern.
  • Check their solution - After coloring each button to extend the pattern, clicking the Check Answer button to find out if their solution is correct.
  • Generate a new pattern - Click the New Problem button anytime to see a new pattern.

The National Library of Virtual Manipulatives is a three-year NSF supported project to develop a library of uniquely interactive, web-based virtual manipulatives or concept tutorials, mostly in the form of Java applets, for mathematics instruction (K-8 emphasis). The project includes dissemination and extensive internal and external evaluation. For more information, please visit http://nlvm.usu.edu/en/nav/vlibrary.html.
